You know this as much as we do—fast fashion is everywhere. It promises cheap prices, endless choice, and next-day delivery. But what it doesn’t advertise is the true cost of those £5 t-shirts and impulse buys. Spoiler: it’s women, workers, and the planet who are paying the price.
At The Feminist Shop, we’ve made a conscious decision to do things differently. Because it is good—for people, for the planet, and for the principles we stand for, and we always wanted to be a brand that you are proud to support! that want to shout about from every roof!
Fast Fashion Exploits Women—At Every Step
The fashion industry is a feminist issue, plain and simple. Around 80% of garment workers are women—many of them young, many of them in the Global South, and most of them working in conditions that are anything but empowering.
Low wages, unsafe factories, impossible deadlines, and constant pressure from major brands to produce more for less—it’s a system that relies on the exploitation of female labour. And while influencers are doing “hauls,” these workers are literally hauling fabric for 12+ hours a day with little to no labour protections.
This isn’t just about bad bosses or greedy corporations—it’s about a global structure built on colonial legacies and economic inequality. And it’s one that feminism should be shouting about.
And Then There’s the Planet…
Fast fashion doesn’t just hurt people—it’s also choking the planet. The industry is responsible for around 10% of global carbon emissions. It pollutes rivers with toxic dyes, produces mind-boggling amounts of waste, and churns out clothes that are designed to be worn once and thrown away.
It’s the opposite of sustainable. And it’s the opposite of what we believe in.
Feminism doesn’t stop at human rights—it includes the right of future generations to inherit a liveable world. It includes care for the Earth, not because it’s trendy, but because it’s essential.
A Feminist Alternative: Slow, Ethical, Intentional
That’s why we’ve chosen to do things a different way.
At The Feminist Shop, we work with Stanley/Stella, a brand rated “Great” by Good On You, and one that shares our values of ethics, transparency, and quality. Our garments are made from organic cotton, certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), and manufactured under fair working conditions.
But we don’t stop there. All our products are made-to-order. That means we only produce what’s needed—no overstock, no warehouse waste,
And we drop ship, so the products go directly to you from warehouse, reducing carbon footprint, packaging, and we always deliver plastic free! Yes, it takes a little longer to arrive—but that’s kind of the point.
We want people to buy with intention. To choose something they’ll wear proudly and keep for years—not something they’ll forget in the back of a drawer after one Instagram post.
It’s Not Just About Clothes—It’s About Values
For us, fashion is a form of activism. What we wear can be a statement—but more importantly, how we wear it and where it comes from is a reflection of our values.
We believe in slowing down. In supporting systems that prioritise people and the planet over profit. In creating a culture of care rather than consumption. And in reminding ourselves that feminism means challenging injustice in all its forms—including the ones stitched into our clothes.
What Can You Do?
We get it—ethical fashion can feel like a big shift. But like all things, it starts with awareness.
-
Educate yourself: Learn about who makes your clothes and under what conditions. Knowledge is power.
-
Buy less, but better: Choose pieces that are made to last and mean something to you.
-
Support ethical brands: Especially those that are transparent about their practices.
-
Start conversations: Talk to friends and family about fast fashion. Share what you’ve learned. Use your platform to bring others in this journey with you.
-
Push for change: From government regulations to holding big brands accountable, our voices matter.
Fast fashion is built on speed, disposability, and silence. We’re here to slow it down, speak up, and offer something better. Because fashion should never come at the cost of someone else’s dignity—or the planet’s future.
We’re not here to follow the rules of fast fashion—we’re here to rewrite them. Thoughtfully. Sustainably and with feminist values in every step of the way.
