10 Ways to Mark International Women’s Day 2025 (Beyond Marching!)

International Women’s Day is a day of action, celebration, and solidarity. Marching is, of course, a brilliant and fundamental way to make our voices heard, to bond with others, and to protest for gender equality. But beyond the march, there are so many ways to mark the day and keep the feminist spirit alive. Any excuse is a good one to celebrate, uplift, and connect with feminist voices, so here are ten ideas to make the most of IWD this year:

1) Feminist Book Swap 📚

Books change minds, spark conversations, and inspire action. Why not gather your friends for a feminist book swap? Everyone brings a book by a feminist author - whether fiction, non-fiction, memoir, or poetry - and leaves with a new one to read. Not only is it a sustainable way to find new favourites, but it’s also a great excuse to talk about the books that have shaped us. And, of course, if you’re looking for recommendations (wink wink), we have sooo many fantastic feminist books atThe Feminist Shop to choose from!

2) Feminist Film Day 🎬

Movies have the power to shape culture and conversations. Organise a feminist film day where you and your friends watch a classic feminist film (or one of the newest releases) and then discuss it together - the conversation afterwards is often the best part! FromThelma & Louise toHidden Figures,Portrait of a Lady on Fire toPromising Young Woman, there are endless options to explore. Make popcorn, grab some drinks, and get ready to dissect the narratives, representation, and impact of each film.

3) Visit an Art Exhibition by a Woman Artist 🎨

Women artists have long been underrepresented in galleries and museums, so why not take the opportunity to explore and support them? Check out exhibitions featuring women artists, whether contemporary or historical, and immerse yourself in their creativity and perspective. If there aren’t any local exhibitions, you can explore online collections from institutions like the National Museum of Women in the Arts or the Guerrilla Girls’ digital archives.

4) Create & Share a Women’s Music Playlist 🎶

Music is a powerful way to connect and uplift. Curate a playlist featuring women musicians and share it widely! You can theme it however you like -Women Getting Us Ready to Dance,Women’s Voices for Chilling,Riot Grrrl Anthems, orEmpowering Ballads. Post your playlist on social media, share it in group chats, or in the comments of this post! and invite others to do the same. Who knows? You might just discover your new favourite artist!

5) Arts & Crafts Feminist Get-Together ✂️

Unleash your creativity and host an arts and crafts session with a feminist twist! Gather friends, grab some magazines, glue, and scissors, and make a collage about what womanhood means to you. Whether it’s personal, political, abstract, or humorous, it’s a fun and meaningful way to express yourself. Set the vibe with snacks, drinks, and maybe even one of the feminist playlists from #4 playing in the background. The result? A beautiful collective expression of feminism, friendship, and fun.

6) Support Women-Owned Businesses 💸

Put your money where your feminism is! On IWD (and beyond), make a conscious effort to buy from women-owned businesses. Whether it’s a book, a piece of jewellery, a meal from a local café, or skincare products, supporting women entrepreneurs helps close the economic gender gap. You can also share recommendations for your favourite women-led businesses with us, with your friends and online community!

7) Write Letters to Women Who Inspire You 💌

Take a moment to write letters (or heartfelt messages) to women who have made an impact on your life. It could be a mentor, a teacher, a friend, a family member, or even a public figure. Let them know how they’ve inspired you and why their work or presence matters. It’s a simple but powerful way to show appreciation and spread positivity.

8) Host a Feminist Trivia Night 🎤

Gather friends for an IWD-themed trivia night! Create questions about feminist history, achievements of women, pop culture moments, and intersectional feminism (you can find ideas on internet, and once is done you can use it every year!). If you want to raise money to donate (#9) You can get people to pay a fee and add a friendly competitive edge by offering feminist-themed prizes (like books, tote bags, or vouchers for women-owned businesses).

9) Volunteer or Donate to a Women’s Organisation 🤝

IWD is the perfect excuse to support charities or grassroots organisations helping women. Whether it’s donating to a domestic violence shelter, volunteering for a mentorship programme, or supporting organisations tackling period poverty, small acts can make a huge difference. There are ways through our ideas to collect some cash to redirect it, that way you also spread the word about why you chose that particular organisation and educate others on what they do and why it is important for you!

10) Reclaim the Streets with Feminist Street Art 🖌️

Channel your inner Guerrilla Girl! If you’re feeling artistic (and have a legal space to do it! in case we are make liable for our ideas), create feminist posters (#5) , chalk messages, or murals that celebrate women and challenge sexism. Stick them up in your local community or even just decorate your own space with empowering visuals.
