Lumanlan presents concrete tools for honouring and working toward meeting the needs of all family members. In doing so she presents a compelling argument that this style of parenting makes for more harmonious family life whilst also promoting a more just society. Parenting Beyond Power brings together the key elements of NVC, problem solving, unconditional parenting and social justice parenting to provide a way of being with children that avoids the standard patriarchy and white supremacy perpetuating (power over) pitfalls of punishment & reward, coercion & shame etc. I found the content that spoke to marrying secular ethics (compassion & common humanity) with parenting practices super beneficial. I will refer back to this book often, and especially whenever I perceive a potential disconnect between my parenting and my values.
